Skittle shuttles, plank ball, floppies, pogos, and froggers!  If that is not enough to make you want to be a kid again, I don’t know what will!  Our kids program at Crossfit TriCities has pretty much the same focus as our adult classes, it just is…well…more fun!  A warm-up, a movement focus, some mobility, a conditioning segment and a game (yahoo!) are what these young athletes are working hard on in class!  While our primary intention is to have fun being active, there are a slew of benefits that come along with it!

A developmentally appropriate strength and conditioning program can put your child on a lifetime path of health and fitness by:

  • Improving your child’s performance in most any sport, from dance and cheer to baseball and football
  • Protecting joints and muscles from sports-related injuries
  • Maintaining a healthy weight
  • Increasing muscle strength and endurance
  • Developing proper movements that your child will use throughout their lifetime
  • Strengthening your child’s bones
  • Promoting healthy blood pressure and cholesterol levels
  • Improving your child’s self-esteem and confidence

Shall I go on?  I will leave it at that for now, but as you can see, fun and fitness can lead to a whole ‘lotta good for their bodies!  Now that I have you honed in on all the benefits of our kids class, let me take a minute to introduce myself…Coach Katie!

I have been a member of Crossfit TriCities for 4 years now and counting.  I began my journey here after my husband returned from a deployment in which during, I gave birth to my 4th son.  I don’t know what drew me to classes more…the idea of doing something healthy for my body, or an hour of not hearing “mom, mommy…momma…MOM!”.   In the end it was an all-around win for me!

Now if we back up even more in time, to my high-school days, college and post college, you would likely find me in or around a pool.  I was a swimmer and a water polo player (no horses are used) and spent each summer of my high school years training at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs for the Jr. National Water Polo Team.  Here is where I learned how to properly strength train and effectively move my body.

Fast-forward some years and I became the boys high school varsity water polo coach at Stevenson high school.  I’ll tell ya, it was here where I realized how incredibly much I loved coaching.  These boys were tough, they worked hard both in and out of the water for their team.  They had goals, setbacks and successes.  It was AMAZING to watch and guide them through it all.  At any given time, you could check my pulse, and you would think that I was the one in the pool swimming back and forth and getting pushed under water.  Being part of the boys doing something great, being something great and striving to be better is indescribable.

Now let’s get back to the present that brings me to YOU!  As your kids coach and even your coach-I promise to bring you all the passion I have for being better – not just stronger or faster, but healthier and happier!  I cannot wait to celebrate the effort, the strengths, the struggles, and the wins of our kids class.  I ask my (own) kids everyday they come home from school:  “what did you struggle at or fail at today?”  They know that if they don’t have an answer for me-they did not push themselves to be better.  We know that struggle and failure are essential to success…so if that struggle is to do 10 burpees without stopping, have more confidence in ourselves or to make healthy choices, you can count on me every step of the way!
