1. It’s fun!

And it is. Period. Participating in the CrossFit Open during Thursday Night Throwdowns and Saturday heats is just plain fun – and kind of a big deal. We have counters, score-cards, loads of spectators and lots of cheering! It truly is a community event
It immediately bonds us because it feels like we’re going to battle together – in a light-hearted Harry Potter sort of way. We’re all nervous, but when we put our hands in the circle and yell at the top of our lungs, it is our buy-in to the team. It roots us deeper into our community. I know they’re willing to give it their all and possibly fail or possibly triumph and man, if they are, so am I.

2. Good is Good Enough

If you’re showing up for classes, you’re good…and that’s good enough. Trust me. You don’t have to be a firebreather to participate in the CrossFit Open. All workouts are scaleable. The Open is about going to the Games. It’s about reaching deep and giving all you got…no matter your current level of fitness.

3. Tap into Your Competitive Fire

You’re going to be part of a TEAM.! The older we get, the less we get to experience that feeling…of physical competition and camaraderie. The entire gym is going to be there cheering for you, pushing you. Go for it! Put it on the line and watch yourself come out the other side inspired and changed.

4. Measuring Stick

Your strength, stamina, speed, mobility and skill will all be put to the test. Though it may not be exact, as the tests do change each and every year, participating in the CrossFit Open gives you an opportunity to measure your improvement year over year. Some workouts repeat. Some do not. Regardless, you’ll get an idea of your strengths, your weaknesses and how far you’ve come.

Stepping out of our comfort zone is always easier said than done. Humans are wired to seek balance and safety and familiar surroundings but signing up for the Open will give you 5 new workouts to try, and allow you to test yourself against some of the best athletes in the sport. You are good enough. And you won’t know exactly how good unless you push yourself. Even if you don’t do the workouts RX, you might surprise yourself with what you can do. Plus, you need a benchmark for next year. Measuring progress can only be done by challenging yourself, and then challenging yourself again.

Whatever level you are, each workout can be scaled to suit you, yet still lets you compete. Whether that means working with an empty bar or doing jumping pull ups instead of muscle ups it doesn’t matter. You still get the chance to workout, enjoy the atmosphere, sense of community and measure your times against others.

7. We NEED you.

These workouts cannot be done well without each other’s support! An important part of CrossFit is mutually shared experiences (ok pain) and this is one that is going on for 5 weeks. If you can’t beat em…..You will also learn about yourself and your fellow athletes as we push ourselves together. It’s a huge community builder, and a strong community benefits us all.
